Hey there, fellow radio enthusiasts! Let's talk about a very useful tool to have in the shack –

the Nano Vector Network Analyzer, or Nano VNA. If you haven’t heard of them yet or believe them to be too complex, you should think again. This small and inexpensive tool makes complex measurements accessible and affordable for everyone.

What exactly is a Nano VNA? In simple terms, it’s a device that measures the impedance and other characteristics of radio frequency (RF) components like antennas, filters, and cables. Think of it as a Swiss Army knife for RF testing. Traditional VNAs used to cost an arm and a leg, but the Nano VNA brings this technology to the masses with its budget-friendly price tag. Various versions by different manufacturers are currently available for about $60 to over $300 on Amazon. However, you do not have to spend top dollar to get a valuable piece of test gear that will serve your radio needs well.


Why should you care about it? Whether you're fine-tuning your antenna setup or experimenting with new designs, the Nano VNA provides precise data that can significantly enhance your projects. It’s like having a lab in your pocket. You can measure parameters such as S-parameters, phase, complex impedance, SWR, return loss, and more, all in a compact device that fits in the palm of your hand.

Setting up and using the Nano VNA is straightforward. You start by calibrating the device using the included calibration kit – this ensures accuracy in your measurements. Nano VNA Calibration Standards & Case

As mentioned above, several versions of the Nano VNA exist, and you should know there are some clones out there with less-than-optimal performance. I have a version labeled SAA-2N which have N-connectors in a nice, heavy-duty metal box from Seesi. See the pictures below of the unit: calibration kit with the case, the VNA with a regular graph, and the VNA with a Smith Chart displayed. The SAA-2N works with frequencies between 50 kHz to 3 GHz. It is rechargeable via USB. The kit I purchased came with the unit, a nice semi-hard case, calibration standards, an SMA to N-connector cable, two N-connector cables, and a through connector (N-N). It cost about from about $110-135. I do recommend this version, but there are other good units.
